O's and Guerrero dancing around the inevitable

Posted on: February 2, 2011 1:29 pm

Vladimir Guerrero Can Vladimir Guerrero just go ahead and sign with someone so that we can get it over with? He's the last DH to sign and the Orioles are the only real team with interest in the aging slugger.

Anyway, the latest is from Buster Olney of ESPN who tweets : "O's have their offer on table; Vlad is looking for more." He also said the next 48 hours will be vital. Could that be a threat from the Orioles to pull their offer and go ahead with Luke Scott back at DH at Felix Pie and Nolan Reimold in the outfield? Scott was good last year as a DH, so the Orioles' decision with Guerrero depends more on their comfort with Pie and Reimold.

Guerrero's choice is pretty much down to the Orioles, who have been offering a reported $3-5 million one-year contract. The Tigers' Dave Dombrowski may speak for the rest of the American League, when told the Detroit News yesterday : "There's not a fit for us. We're not involved with that at all and haven't been."

The only other team with a real opening for a full-time DH could be the Royals, but it's not as if they're going to be handing out big money or multi-year deals. The Blue Jays could return Guerrero to Canada, but they appear to be set with Edwin Encarnacion and Adam Lind at DH and just got one big-money player off the books and are unlikely looking to add another.

O's and Guerrero dancing around the inevitable

It sounds like he boxed himself in, meaning, he had a one-year offer from the Rangers at one point, at least $5 million plus bonuses, but by holding out for a multi-year deal with them, they moved on. And now he's fielding (poorly) one year offers for less money, so he is having a difficult time accepting he "lost" a couple of million by taking the stance he initially did; and now his offer is with a team that is not going to make the playoffs.

If he's got a brain ini his head he'll sign an sign quickly.  He won't want to throw this deal away and be forced to play in KC where he will die a slow death.  Plus he needs to sign on and have a good year so he'll get a follow up year and have a chance at the 500 HR mark and the 1500 RBI.  He's a life time .320 hitter with the above numbers, if he can reach those last two he will be almost assured of HOF in five.

phillies need to try him out as their right fielder. i dont care if he cant field because his offense will offset that. and brown and francisco could come in for defense at the end of games and they can give him pleanty of days rest, while also producing. come on amaro we need something to help the offense out this yr...

I think the Angels just don't want to pay as much as Vlade wants. He can still hit and when healthy poses a big threat to opposing pitchers. But he can only DH and he thinks he should still be playing the outfield! This will be interesting.

Vladdy doesn't seem to be dancing, but sleepwalking.  Vladdy's punching out numbers as if someone is actually listening.   The deal is etched in stone, but Vladdy is STILL trying to chisel out a new one.  Wake up Vladdy, it's time to sign or sing.  The Fat Lady is ready for your duo performance.  The last time she belted out a tune Jermaine Dye was present...and then he wasn't!...hint hint.

Stay away Vlad! I don't want you. You serve no purpose here. 10 years too late.

O's and Guerrero dancing around the inevitable

I'm a diehard O's fan. At the same time I would welcome Guerrero to the lineup, I am very on the wall on whether we should actually sign him or not. He would definitely reduce playing time for Felix Pie (would be moved to 4th OF) and maybe Nolan Reimold (although I'm assuming he goes back down to full time ABs in AAA if Vlad signs).

No matter what, Vlad is clearly unhappy with how this offseason has played out. If he wants a full time job, he can have one here in Baltimore for a little less money than he might get in the only other logical destination, Toronto, but he will definitely get more playing time. Considering the amount of money he has made over the duration of his career and the fact that he wants an every day DH job, it makes more sense for him to sign with the O's. SO GET IT DONE, VLADDY!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyone who watched the World Series knows Vlad cannot play the OF anymore. I guess the Angels are serious about Abreu to DH.

Vlad had a very productive year in 2010, but I guess people feel the ballpark was a factor. I think he'd have a big year in Baltimore.
Posada is good option at DH for the Yankees. Switch hitter---still has good power. Don't think the Yanks would be interested. I wouldn't want to take playing time away from Posada against righthanded pitching.

I don't know how many options Vlad has left. Seattle? Angels? Detroit says they are not in it. If he can't go to the Angels, he might as well go to the bandbox in Baltimore.

Apparently you're only looking at his stats.  He played 17 games in the OF last year.  There's a reason for that.
His OF days are well behind him.  Physically he just can't do it anymore.  The Yankees already have a full time, big money DH who can't play the field anymore either.  His name is Posada.  There is a reason they signed Martin to catch.  Vladdy needs to realize the market has turned and sign where he can get ABs.  The O's will not go to the post season, no surprise there.  If he wanted to go to the post season, he should have signed with Texas when he had the chance.  That ship has sailed.
