Blanton headed to Boston?

Joe Blanton Maybe the Red Sox were so grateful to Phillies for keeping Cliff Lee out of the American League East, they're helping Philadelphia afford Lee by taking Joe Blanton off their hands, Sports Illustrated 's Jon Heyman tweets .

Blanton has two years and $17 million left on his contract, some of which the Phillies are likely o pick up. Still, it seemed moving Blaton was something the Phillies needed to do to be able to afford Lee, because $17 million is just a tad much for a fifth starter for anyone but the Yankees.

Blanton was 9-6 with a 4.82 ERA in 28 starts for the Phillies last season. He won 42 wins in his first three full seasons of his career with Oakland, before being traded by the A's to the Phillies in July of 2008 for Adrain Cardenas, Matt Spencer and Josh Outman.

UPDATE: The Boston Globe 's Pete Abe tweets the Phillies and Red Sox have talked about Blanton, but no deal is in place.

-- C. Trent Rosecrans

UPDATE : The Boston Herald ' s Scott Lauber says talks between the two clubs were never serious, according to sources from both sides. This never made sense in the first place as the Red Sox are five-deep in the rotation. (Six, if you count Tim Wakefield in the bullpen.)

One possible school of thought is that acquiring Blanton would have allowed the Sox to shop Daisuke Matsuzaka as teams have reportedly had a fair amount of interest in the righty.

Blanton headed to Boston?

Why were The Red Sox willing to non tender Papelbom I think the term is, if Rivera had signed with them?

Blanton headed to Boston?

You basically just proved a lot of my comments right...I appreciate you taking the time out of your day to clarify my points.

So your trying to say trading away Hanley Ramirez won you two world series titles? how? I hope you enjoyed those two wins , because Boston won't be winning any time soon.Damn, up until a few years back they hadn't won a damn thing since what? 1918? !!!!!!!!!! 1918! NOT 1980 something....If you look at the franchise in that light, they are a failure as a baseball team.Sure, they make money..probably always will, but I'm pretty sure The Pittsburgh Pirates make money as well.

So I guess when Crawford is 34-35 & has no legs or knees left & is forced to DH , then that will be a great signing huh? Carl Crawford is the best outfielder in baseball? No , he isn't.He is being hugely overpaid, and it will be proven as the years go on.No one is in there "prime" in there mid 30's.Someone is in there prime when there 25! How can you compare a top notch pitcher to a b grade outfielder? you can't....it's just more Boston Rod Sox fan bitterness coming out, your ego's thought you were going to sign Rivera (which they tried too), sign Cliff Lee (which they tried too) and you would get the headlines in the sports pages over the Yankees....now that you have been trumped by The Phillies, it's easy to see the bitterness in your words, personally I love it.

Jason Varitek shouldn't even be in the major leagues...Oh yea, the .220 , .209  & .232 he batted is amazing.
Beltre had one good year, then he left.

Martinez, gone.

Bay, gone.

Scutaro, overpaid.

Lackey,overpaid.

Drew,overpaid

Blanton headed to Boston?

Hey Noles,

Which of your comments are based solely on fact?  According to you, "Crawfords deal is laughable....7 years for a guy who only has a few solid years left.Ortiz is done,Youklis is a bum....Varitek is your catcher? another bum right there".  Those sound like unjustifiable opinions to me.

Also, Crawford is only 29 so how is he past his prime? I figure he is pretty much in his prime right now. Sure, maybe years 6 and 7 of the contract won't be as productive, and the Red Sox did overpay a little, but ask Philly how confident they are paying Lee 27.5 million when he is 39.

You also can't say that we buy all of our players and don't build through the draft and farm system. Youk, Pedrioia, Lester, Bucholz, Ellsbury, Papelbon, Bard, Lowrie, Kalish.  They all figure to be key parts of our team for the next few years.

You say we "threw" money at Beltre?  He took a pay cut to sign with Boston, and went on to be one of the top 3B in the majors both offensively and defensively, and will most likely get paid much more with whoever signs him now.  Are you saying they were wrong to do that? Seems like Beltre worked out fine to me. The Red Sox also gave up a crappy player they didnt want to trade for Bay and he went on to hit 30 HRs. The Sox were correct not to overpay him last offseason so I don't see your point in the Bay trade.

Also, nobody in Boston would trade the 2 WS rings since 2004 to get Hanley Ramirez back. If you would, you are not a true fan of your team or the sport.

Sure, not every signing/trade has worked, but I think the Red Sox have had a pretty strong track record since new management took over. I have no problem with you wanting to base your arguments on facts, but it looks like most of your "facts" are wrong... have a nice day.

Blanton headed to Boston?

Wait, Blanton would not be the Phillies fifth starter. He'd be their fourth. Halladay, Lee, Hamels and Blanton. Who is the fourth starter ahead of Blanton?

Blanton headed to Boston?

The Guru27 is one of the biggest morons on the Internet, and by far one of the dumbest people I have come across in my years on CBS Sports.....wow.You can not "buy" a player through trade! A team may do a salary dump, but they get something in return! I love that The Red Sox have traded for guys that didn't wanna play there anymore, you essentially give up top prospects to rent a player for a few months.....I'm sure Boston would love to have Hanley Ramirez right now! One of the best short stops in baseball!

I'm not gonna sit on here & argue with people who speak soley off opinion and not facts....have a nice day.
