Mark Teixeira Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira left Game 4 of the ALCS with what appeared to be a right hamstring injury.

With two on and no outs in the bottom of the fifth inning, Teixeira hit a ball to Michael Young at third base. Young touched the bag and threw wide to first, where Teixeira was falling into first base safely.

However, about 10 feet before the bag, Teixeira grabbed his right hamstring and his momentum took him through the bag. He left the game quickly, with no discussion of staying in, as he was in obvious pain.

Marcus Thames pinch-ran for Teixeira and it appears Nick Swisher will move to first base for the Yankees. Backup first baseman Lance Berkman is serving as the team's designated hitter, but if he were used to replace Teixeira at first, the team would lose its DH spot.

UPDATE: Swisher is indeed at first and Thames is staying in the game in right.

UPDATE: The Yankees announced that Teixeira will undergo an MRI at New York Presbyterian Hospital to determine the severity of the injury. The team is calling it a strained right hamstring.

UPDATE: The Yankees have announced Teixeira has a Grade 2 hamstring strain and is out for the rest of the postseason. He will need six-to-eight weeks to recover, which means his season is over.

The Yankees will replace Teixeira with rookie Eduardo Nunez on the postseason roster, meaning Teixeira will be ineligible for the World Series roster. Nunez played in 30 games this season, hitting .280/.321/.360 with a homer in 50 at-bats. He's played second base, third base and shortstop.

UPDATE: From Girardi's postgame press conference : "You know, Tex talked about he felt something pop in his hamstring. Barring some miracle, you know, he won't be with us tomorrow and playing. You know, we are planning on bringing up Núñez, so that would mean he would be out the next round, as well. But it doesn't look good."

Aging players at key positions? Where exactly? They only have 2 aging players, Jeter and Posada....
Jeter and Cano are the only ones hitting...

I would give credit to the Texas pitching as well as the slump of Tex and Arod... I think they are like 2-30something combined.

So Cash was smart last year when they rolled to the WS Title, now Cash is dumb again??

Give it a break, you Yankee haters come with the same lines every year.... blah blah blah..

How about giving credit to a Texas team that is playing lights out, great D, great pitching, clutch hits...

Let's be real: this just gives a seeming excuse to an under-prepared, under-talented Yanks team not up to beating the quality of competition left in these playoffs.  Tex or no Tex, this team was obviously going down: terrible rotation, ageing players at key positions, and relative lack of great Yanks tradition of discipline at the plate.  This just makes it inevitably a 5-game series.  On to next year, in hopes that Cash can be smarter than he's been in recent years.

So with as big as that dude's legs are, he still gets a hammy pull? I can only come to one conclusion on that one. STRETCH!!!! There's NO reason whatsoever for ANY athlete to pull a leg muscle (hammy, quad, groin, calf) if they properly STRETCHED!!!!!

I'm a huge Red Sox fan and I still don't wish that on the Yankees. I wish that they lose every game but I never hope for an injury like that. I'd much rather them lose at full strength.  Believe me when I say the injury bug sucks. Hopefully he can make a full recovery soon and get back in there sooner than we think.

I would not be so excited about getting Lee. Crawford is all but a Yankee unless the A's want to get after him. Lee, he is a different cat, and I do not think he will sign with the yankees if anyone with a decent team is in the running. I say Texas keeps him. But never say never, if the Yankees do get both Lee and Crawford, all I can say is WOW, and they BETTER WIN IT ALL NEXT YEAR. That would be unreal. Good luck!

Actually, we will have Cliff Lee next year.  Like it or not, that piece starts a new dynasty!!!!  Still hope for this year, but if not we will shine for years to come next year.  Get well soon Tex, we need you healthy.....  If the Yanks dont make it, I am hoping for a SF vs. TEX Series.  Then the haters wanting parity in the league can shut their pie holes.
